Seaquestr launches SEAOtool to help yachting and marine industry track carbon footprint

Seaquestr has launched a groundbreaking software for the yachting and marine industries, SEAOtool, which aims to simplify the process of understanding and tracking emissions, providing tailored tools for a sector that has traditionally found sustainability challenging.

Seaquestr was founded by a team of industry veterans with extensive experience in yachting, corporate sustainability, and software engineering. The founders have backgrounds in both the maritime world and the corporate sector, giving them unique insights into the challenges of integrating sustainability into yachting and marine operations.

CEO Zennor Pascoe grew up in Cornwall, UK, and brings a deep-rooted connection to the maritime world and a passion for sustainability. After a successful career in yachting, Zennor trained as an ISO 14064-3 lead verifier in carbon accounting, transitioning into sustainability, working with leading organisations such as Farm Carbon Toolkit and Climate Impact Partners on carbon accounting and project management. These experiences highlighted the need for a specialised tool to help the marine industry manage its environmental impact more effectively.

Zennor states that, “My work with the Farm Carbon Toolkit was where I observed how carbon accounting platforms that are specifically designed for a particular industry made the complex task of carbon accounting much more simple and intuitive for the user, and produced better, more complete data.”

She continues, “SEAOtool pulls together all the threads of my two careers, and really centres around my observation that sustainability and decarbonisation needs to be accessible, intuitive and affordable but still not compromising on robust data, quality and best practice.”

Industry Need

SEAOtool addresses a critical gap in the market. The yachting industry, known for its high environmental impact, often struggles with sustainability due to the complexity of its daily operations. SEAOtool simplifies this by providing a platform specifically designed for the industry. It offers a comprehensive set of emissions data and analytics tools that enable users to understand their carbon footprint and identify opportunities for reduction.

The platform arrives at a pivotal moment, equipping the marine industry to meet current and upcoming mandatory emissions reporting requirements, such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). It also addresses the critical need for accurate and relevant data to support sustainability claims and communications, aligning with the EU's new Green Claims Directive (GCD).

By actually understanding the data, you can work out the business cases for reduction. Whether it's reducing energy consumption through upgrading HVAC systems, opting for a biobased composite, reducing the number of flights related to operations, switching to EVs, or installing solar panels”, comments Zennor.

The software is built around the unique operations of vessels and marine companies. It includes a vast dataset of marine-specific emissions factors, making it more accurate and relevant than generic ESG platforms. Users can create a carbon footprint by entering data on various activities and products used during the reporting year, such as marine fuels, water supply, waste, and travel. The platform then provides detailed analytics, helping users pinpoint where they can make the most significant impact, it then enables reporting aligned to the GHG Protocol, producing the most widely understood, and transferable data that can be used by the widest range of stakeholders.

Early Backing and Availability

SEAOtool has garnered significant interest and support from various sectors within the marine industry, including yacht captains, engineers, sustainability consultants, and marine insurers. The software is already being tested and used by a diverse group of stakeholders, demonstrating its wide applicability and potential for driving industry-wide change.

The platform is currently available for demos and consultations, with SEAOtool offering the software free of charge during its initial launch phase. The company plans to introduce a subscription model in 2025, but for now, the focus is on getting the software into the hands of users to demonstrate its value.

SEAOtool will be showcased at key industry events this year, including METSTRADE in Amsterdam in November. Interested parties are encouraged to book a demo or visit the SEAOtool team at these events to learn more about how the software can support their sustainability goals.
