How a Superyacht Career Prepared MyRotat Founder for Entrepreneurship

Superyachts are often synonymous with innovative design and sophisticated technology, yet day-to-day operations onboard frequently rely on outdated practices. Being deeply involved in these operations highlights shortcomings and many crew members become inspired to develop their own solutions. Further, working in this fast-paced environment can uniquely equip crew members for the demands of entrepreneurial careers after they leave the industry.

For over six years, MyRotat founder Tomasz Pankowski, worked as an engineer onboard some of the most technologically advanced motor yachts in the industry. Working on yachts over 100 metres long, he encountered complex systems and modern engines. His responsibilities included maintaining engine rooms, deck equipment, and tenders, which provided him with a broad range of technical expertise.

The journey wasn’t without its challenges: “It wasn’t always rosy, but that’s part of this job,” he reflects. Despite the difficulties, the experience was invaluable, equipping him with a unique skill set and a problem-solving mindset crucial for his future business endeavours.

Lessons From The Yachting Industry

The rigorous demands of yachting instilled in Tomasz a crucial problem-solving attitude: “The most valuable thing I learnt onboard was problem-solving because this is the attitude you need as an engineer: ‘There is always a solution and a way to fix the problem. Giving up is not acceptable!’” This proactive approach, learned from mentors and colleagues in the industry, became a cornerstone of his approach to business. As an engineer, he didn’t just solve problems; he observed and took notes, gaining insights into how the industry could improve from both crew and management perspectives. These observations laid the groundwork for MyRotat, an innovative solution to managing the rotational schedules of yacht crew.

From Engineering To Entrepreneurship

The transition from crew member to entrepreneur was driven by a long-standing desire to own a business: “I always wanted to have my own business. It was only a matter of finding the right idea, and an idea that I could fully commit to.” he says. This realisation grew stronger over time, leading him to pursue MyRotat full-time once the minimum viable product (MVP) was ready.

Leaving the yachting industry as a crew member didn’t mean abandoning it altogether. Instead, Tomasz sought to improve it with his software. Before making the leap, he prepared meticulously, making sure he was financially stable and assembling a team that shared his vision. When the time was right earlier this year, he transitioned from his role on board to full-time work on MyRotat.

Challenges When Building MyRotat

Starting a business presented its own set of challenges, notably in finding the right team: “Initially finding the right people was challenging. It was hard to find people with the same attitude as me and people that think outside the box,” Tomasz recalls. Explaining the vision and functionality of MyRotat clearly to the wider team was another hurdle. However, determination and belief in the product kept Tomasz motivated.

MyRotat is built on innovation and a commitment to creating a “Copy-Paste Free Zone.” The company’s goal is to address the specific needs of the industry with original solutions. Despite the initial difficulties, the satisfaction of assembling a capable team and making progress has been immensely rewarding.

Advice For Aspiring Yacht Crew Entrepreneurs

For yacht crew considering their own entrepreneurial ventures, Tomasz offers this advice: “If you are not willing to commit 100% of your time, do not do it. You will have to take a full risk at some point.” Tomasz also emphasises the importance of patience and timing, understanding that whilst the need for a product may be obvious to its creator, initial clients may need some convincing: “You also have to understand that your product is very important to you, but not always to your client. You have to be patient and pick the right moment for everything.”

He also advises against waiting for perfection before launching: “Do not wait until your product is ‘perfect’. You have to show it to your potential clients to get feedback and show them the value you bring to the table. Make your own mistakes and learn from them.”

The Road Ahead for MyRotat

Looking forward, MyRotat aims to revolutionise crew management over the next six to twelve months. The focus will be on enhancing the workflow between management and crew, automating processes, and addressing specific customer needs. MyRotat is committed to listening to clients and continuously improving the platform.

Tomasz’s transition from yacht engineer to entrepreneur exemplifies how industry experience, a problem-solving mindset, and a passion for innovation can lead to successful startup ventures. His journey offers inspiration to other yacht crew members contemplating their own entrepreneurial paths.
