Icelandic high-tech company Hefring Marine, has been awarded the prestigious Svifaldan, “The Innovation Award”, presented at the Icelandic Seafood Conference and sponsored by TM insurance company. The ceremony took place at Harpa, Reykjavik's renowned concert and conference hall, as part of a two-day event highlighting the most groundbreaking advancements in the maritime and fishing industries.
Hefring Marine's smart AI systems, designed to enhance safety and efficiency on the water, have captured the attention of both the national and international maritime community. The award recognises Hefring’s innovative approach to navigation technology, which collects and analyses real-time data from vessel movements, wave conditions, and onboard equipment to recommend optimal cruising speeds.
By utilising artificial intelligence, the system helps ship operators make informed decisions, significantly reducing accident risks, minimising maintenance expenses, conserving fuel, and lowering the carbon footprint.
Methúsalem Hilmarsson of TM, who presented the award, emphasised the importance of supporting young and visionary companies in the maritime sector. "The aim of the Svifaldan award," he noted, "is to inspire innovation and entrepreneurship, while highlighting the vital role of sustainable and forward-thinking solutions in the fishing and maritime industries."
The selection process for Svifaldan was rigorous, involving a jury composed of experts from across the fishing and technology sectors. The criteria included the project's potential contribution to sustainability, its innovative character, and the enhancement of the Icelandic fishing industry's global image.
Hefring Marine has gained significant traction, with its technology already in use by
organisations like the Norwegian Rescue and the Icelandic Search and Rescue. Earlier this year, Hefring Marine secured €2.2 million in funding, underscoring strong investor confidence in its mission.
"We are honoured to receive the Svifaldan award", said Karl Birgir Björnsson, CEO and co- founder of Hefring Marine. "It validates our commitment to innovation and safety in marine navigation, and we are excited about the impact our technology will continue to have on the global maritime industry".
The Seafood Conference continues to be a beacon of innovation, shining a spotlight on advancements that safeguard the future of seafaring and fishing operations. Hefring Marine’s achievement marks a significant milestone, further cementing Iceland';s role as a hub for cutting-edge maritime technology.
